When empathy is reserved only for those who agree with us, it stops being empathy and becomes moral tribalism. Real empathy doesn’t ask, “Do you share my views?”, it asks, “Are you human?” The moment we start rationing compassion based on ideology, we’re no longer practicing virtue, we’re enforcing control. Discernment doesn’t mean tolerating harm. But neither does it mean dehumanizing those we disagree with. A society rooted in selective empathy will never know peace, only cycles of retaliation dressed as righteousness.
